Eat, draw, practice aikido 2nd kyu Daryl
食べること、書くこと、合気道の稽古をすること 2級 ダレル

The more I practice, the more parallels I notice between art, aikido and
cooking. They all utilise fundamentals, techniques, practice and
exploration. In art the fundamentals are composition, values/lighting,
colours and anatomy. For aikido they’re turning, distance, circular
movement and harmony. For many things one can apply principles, and
through repetition, increase their prowess in something. Even if you
understand an explanation, without applying the theory to practice one
cannot move ahead in their ability to execute on those ideas.
Techniques in cookery include frying, whisking, mixing, braising and
emulsifying, whereas in aikido its shihonage, tenchinage, sankyo, gokyo
and kubinage. These should adhere to fundamentals and principles in
achieving the goal whether that be throwing an person or cooking a curry.
The end result may well not require many techniques or all the
fundamentals but when carried out regularly improvement is traceable
over time. Such improvement may be more noticeable in visual arts but
can also be seen in other arts too.
As one’s confidence grows it is important not to grow complacent
however, lest we stop growing. Our perception and ability grow at
different rates so at certain points in this ebb and flow we can feel
stuck at a standstill (or even that like our abilities are decreasing).
Knowing that this is, in effect false, can help one power through such
points.
All the artists in the tutorials I have been watching speak about these
things; the perseverance and practice needed to reach a certain level;
however much we learn or however proficient one becomes there is always
more to discover, further to push one’s skills. This desire for a
profession or hobby that remains interesting over an entire lifetime
seems common, and many of these artists also express an interest in
cooking, sports or martial arts.
So my style may be unique, but the way I feel about art and practice is
very common.

自信がついてくると、それがただの自己満足になってしまわないことが大事です。
なぜならそこで上達が止まってしまうからです。それぞれの理解や能力の成長の
