The visit by Nakao Sensei and Akiko san this year was fantastic. A
little shorter than usual, but we still managed to enjoy a lot of good
keiko together. The gradings this year were all of a high standard. I
was very pleased, and proud to witness our demonstrations for Nakao
Sensei. I have been reading and enjoying the essays submitted by
Seibukan UK students following the grading tests this year, so I thought
I’d muse a bit too.

I have been practicing Aikido for 24 years now. Prior to Aikido, I did
have a brief look at other martial arts. I did judo as a young boy for
about a year, and I practiced Kyokushin karate for about 2 years in my
mid-teens. I wasn’t particularly proficient in either and gave them up
quite quickly. It wasn’t until some years later as I was approaching my
thirties that I found Aikido, and quite by chance. Having never heard of
it before, a combination of a book, a film and a random demonstration
all colliding in the space of a couple of days suddenly brought it to my
attention. I went with a friend to watch the demo, decided to give it a
try on the night, and for some reason it has just stuck with me ever
since, or perhaps I have just stuck with it. This has always been a bit
of a surprise to me as I always quit everything I ever did as a kid. My
parents were always on at me because I’d started something new a month
before, joined a new club or some such, and was now giving up on it…..
again. The fact that I am still doing Aikido after so long is still a
wonder to me too. I won’t deny that there were/ are times that I think/
thought of quitting, that’s human nature, or maybe just my nature, I
don’t know? However, as the years go by, I find the path of Aikido
becomes wider and longer, and now that I am already stumbling along it,
the end seems so much further away. I am very fortunate to have found
some very kind and generous guides to help me along the path, their
inspiration and integrity helps pick me up every time I fall and
struggle, always seemingly at the right moment. I’m quite sure that
without them, I would have gotten lost many years ago, stuck behind a
rock on a narrow dusty track in the middle of nowhere. I cannot begin to
thank Nakao Sensei and Akiko san enough for everything they have done
for both myself, and Seibukan UK. Their time, patience and wisdom are
priceless, and only serve to inspire me further.
