I am usually nervous about a grading but this time I enjoyed it as I

just thought to myself “just treat it like another Keiko session and do

the best you can do”.

As everyone knows I get really frustrated with myself not being able to

remember techniques and where to move but I just keep turning up again

and again hoping one day it will stick.

Most importantly I enjoy Aikido and I am very glad I found this class,

visiting Japan this year was fantastic again great Keiko and great

company, I made new friends and look forward to many trips to Japan in

future.

The last time I wrote one of these essays I remember I was struggling

with a confusing array of technique names and hand positions. The “flow”

that was being described in class seemed a long way off and I wasn’t

really sure how exactly that was supposed to happen. Now those basic

things seem easier to remember and I spend more of my time thinking

about what my feet and hips are doing, which feels like progress. In

particular, the lesson structure we saw in Seibukan Kobe where the same

attacks are practised in each session with tori choosing the response is

really helpful as it allows me to practice the areas in which I struggle

the most. I am glad we have brought this format back to the UK.

The highlight of this year was undoubtedly the trip to the 60th

anniversary celebration in Kobe. Not only did we meet lots of really

nice people during practice and socially but it was also fascinating to

see the slight differences in approach to Aikido across all the people

in the various dojos and seminars. However, more than anything it was

the similarities to our practice in the UK that stood out and it really

felt as comfortable as training at home. I am looking forward to

travelling more for Aikido in the future.

前回の審査の時、私は技の名前や手の位置などがなかなか覚えられずにいました。

Some martial artists spend their life searching for the secret. I found

it a long time ago. For me, the secret is to practise hard and enjoy

yourself.

I consider myself fortunate to be part of a club where laughter is

common. I have long said that when I stop enjoying martial arts I shall

pack up, but based on the year I have just had, I don’t see it happening

any time soon.

The trip to Japan was a brilliant experience for which I am very

thankful. It was nice to train with so many different people who were

very patient and tolerant.

Finally, I would like to thank our hosts in Japan for allowing me to be

part of their 60th anniversary, they are very generous.

Aikido is a self defence and much more.Apart from learning a lot of

techniques, I have also learnt how to deal with others and understanding

where their opinion come from.Above all the the most important thing

Aikido has given me is the strength to face conflict;it gives me a very

grounded place to be in.

I used to think too much but now I realized how to ignore my thoughts

and concentrate on Aikido.

I am pleased with how far I have come;4th kyu in 22 months, how to use

my core more and less strength, being flexible as a uke and and working

on my foot work.

I’m very grateful to Bryan,Ako,Peter and all dan grades for their

support and encouragement in my preparation for 4th kyu grading.Training

still continues as I train for my 3rd kyu.Looking forward to see Nakao

Sensei and his wife next year as he couldn’t make this time.

My son graded in kickboxing the day after my grading. He is now yellow

belt after 5 months  and feeling really proud. One thing I learnt from

his grading is his Sensei telling them “A black belt is a white belt who

never gave up”.That’s going to be my motto from now.

Movement is life, my shiatsu masseur says to me after each session.

Aikido works when there is movement, when there is some energy to work

with. This has been my latest epiphany after being told constantly by

Bryan that I need to engage fully in the attack whilst acting as Uke

instead of making the attack and standing still waiting for things to

happen. For the Tori, when I stop after an attack, there is no energy to

engage with, no threat to deal with, and subsequently, no point in

applying a technique.

Training with Mark in particular has also brought about many insights.

When you are up against someone bigger and stronger, you really cannot

cheat and use strength to force the technique to work, you do have to

blend with the uke and make use of Uke’s energy and momentum.

I have been enjoying Aikido tremendously over the past few weeks. After

each session I feel great and the effects carry over in the rest of my

life. Going forwards, I need to work on my posture, and I look for wards

to learning new techniques and improving ones I have already learnt.
